Into the Mists by Serene Conneeley

This book has been reviewed as part of the Christmas Advent Calendar 2014

19 sleeps till Christmas

‘Enter the swirling mists of an enchanted land, and open your heart to the mystery...’

These are words well written and placed on the back of Into the Mists by Serene Conneeley. As you enter the swirling mists of the pages of this book you enter a journey full of grief, love, hurt, healing and mystery.

After the death of her parents Carlie is sent to live with a grandmother she never knew existed. A woman her mother had cut from her life at the age of 16, the age Carlie currently is. What this means to Carlie is that she must leave her beloved home and friends in Australia and travel to the U.K. As she grieves for her parents her life is turned upside down.

The journey the reader takes is one of an emotional roller coaster as Carlie finds her place in this new and unexpected life and learns of her mother’s past life of spirituality and witchcraft. There is the loss of her parents, the uncertainty of her grandmother and the finding of herself as she realises her mother was not who she thought she was. Then there is the woman in the mist, who Carlie is convinced cannot be real, a black cat that seems to read her mind and the house within the mist where she finds her mothers book of shadows and the mysteries that unfold.

Into the Mists is a fast paced book that weaves it’s magic. Aimed at the young adult market this book is suitable for all who love a little mystery, love and spellbinding magic. Serene Conneeley writes with a descriptive flare that captivates as you read, taking you within the deepest depths of the characters.

Into the Mists is the first book of a trilogy that you will soon become hooked on. I could not put this book down. On completion my mind was left whirling and wondering, contemplating life as I see it and the mysteries of the world around it. Although fiction this is a book that places you in a position where you can relate it to events within your own life.

This is not the first book by Australian author Serene Conneeley, there have been many before it that relate to the topics of magic and witchcraft. She is the author of Seven Sacred Sites: Magical Journeys That Will Change Your Life and has teamed up with Lucy Cavendish in the publications Faery Magic, Mermaid Magic and Witchy Magic. Within the final pages of Into the Mists Serene Conneeley has included information on the wheel of the year, allowing further resource.

Into the Mists can be seen as a great inspiration for new and upcoming authors who take on the challenge of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) each November. It was on this occasion that Serene took the challenge of 50,000 words in 30 days and gave birth to the wonders of this book. A true inspiration that shows that one can accomplish anything they put their mind too.

After reading Into the Mists I have truly become a fan of the writing of Serene Conneeley, looking forward to the next book in the life of Carlie, a girl who shall grow before my very eyes, taking me on the journey with her.
